Firefighters work on getting into the car to rescue the casualty

Students at ÁÕÀÅÊÓƵ Adams were invited to a one-stop-shop event for information and advice on a range of issues including welfare, safety and health.

As part of the Student W.A.S.H (Welfare, Advice, Safety and Health) event, Newport Fire and Rescue service were on campus to demonstrate a road collision rescue demonstration.

A wide range of other services were also on hand to talk to students about their needs including the National Blood Service, Help 2 Quit, Bikeability, the Police, NHS Telford and Wrekin and more.

The demonstration by the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service saw the retained fire crew from Newport playing out a real life crash scene scenario using specialist cutting equipment.

Martin Richardson, retained fire officer for Newport, said the demonstration was to show students what could happen if they ended up in a similar position.

He warned of the dangers of driving in dangerous weather, while under the influence of alcohol and when not simply concentrating.

Nineteen-year-old student Chris Whitfield, from Carlisle in Cumbria, volunteered to be the casualty while the crew used cutting equipment to stabilise the car and remove the doors and roof before taking him out on a stretcher.

Chris, who is studying BEng (Hons) in Agricultural Engineering, said: “I volunteered to take part because I think it’s really important to show students about driver safety and raise awareness that this could happen if you’re not careful. It’s a good warning.”

Before and after the demonstration, students were invited into the new student services building for housing information, sexual health advice and screening, road safety advice and were even invited to try on ‘beer goggles’ to find out how drinking affects movement.

The annual event proved a huge success, with students taking the time to learn more about what advice is on offer, and where they can find it.
